Necklace Red, Black, White, Tapatoru I
This is our Tapatoru (triangle) necklace, painted in red, black and white colours. These three colours are in reference to the whakataukī:
Kotahi te kohao o te ngira e kuhuna ai te miro ma, te miro pango, te miro whero, i muri i ahau, kia mau ki te aroha, ki te ture me te whakapono.
There is but one eye of the needle, through which the red, white and black threads must pass. Hold fast to the law, hold fast to faith, hold fast to love, forsake all else.
Na Potatau Te Wherowhero 1858
This whakataukī speaks of strength and beauty through both unity and diversity, by alluding to the beauty and the strength of the woven tukutuku. Individual threads are weak, but the process of weaving makes a strong fabric. Individual colours tell no story, but woven together they become beautiful, and can tell a story.
