The kōrero (story) behind the designs:
Meri Kirihimete: this design speaks for itself really, the words Meri Kirihimete are cut out of the material.
Whakarare: This pattern is known to mean to distort or confuse and was traditionally used in whakairo (Māori carving).
Whetū: This design represents a whetū star.
Kape: This pattern comes from kōwhaiwhai (painted decorative patterns) and represents the eyebrow shape. It is also a pattern used in the Tūhoe mana motuhake flag.
