Waitī is one of the stars of Matariki, which is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year.
The kōrero (story) behind this earring design:
Wai means water in Te Reo, and Waitī is the star that is connected to fresh water and all the creatures that live in rivers, streams and lakes. Especially the korokoro. The pattern engraved on the blue perspex represents the hīnaki (eel trap) with tuna (eel) inside it.
